NEW YORK (December 10, 2025) — As the end of 2025 approaches, millions of U.S. professionals are taking a proactive approach to their career moves, according to the newly released 2026 Job Seeker Trends Report from TopResume, the world’s largest resume-writing service. Surveying 2,000 full-time workers, the research reveals that 27% plan to start a job search in the new year, while 37% are still pursuing searches they initiated earlier this year.
The data highlights a shift in job-search behavior: savvy professionals are no longer waiting until January to hit “apply,” but are strategically front-loading their search to stay ahead in a competitive and evolving market. As hiring timelines stretch and tAI takes on a bigger role in recruiting, early planning has become a critical advantage.
“The most strategic job seekers are treating the end of the year as a prep season, rather than a break,” said Amanda Augustine, CPCC, CPRW, and resident Career Expert at TopResume. “Instead of waiting until January when competition is at its fiercest, they’re using the slower holiday weeks to explore their options, reconnect with their network, and refresh their resumes and LinkedIn profiles, laying the groundwork for a meaningful head start. It’s a smart approach that recognizes longer hiring cycles and the unique challenges of today’s job market.”
Key Findings from the 2026 Job Seeker Trends Report:
- Job seekers fear being screened out by AI: 82% of job seekers who use tools like ChatGPT fear automated systems may screen them out before a human ever reviews their application.
- The job search is taking a heavy emotional toll: 68% say the job hunt is negatively affecting their mental health, from constant rejections to the emotional strain of the process itself.
- Flexibility still trumps higher pay: Nearly one in four workers (22%) would turn down a higher-paying job if it meant sacrificing flexibility.
- Slow hiring timelines are pushing job seekers to start earlier: Over a quarter of job seekers say it’s taking more than four months to land an offer, prompting many to start their searches early.
The report also highlights the rise of the “smart job seeker” mindset: candidates are leveraging technology, data, and personalized applications to stand out in a competitive environment. Rather than simply blasting out resumes, many are doing deep employer research, reconnecting with their network, and up-skilling around hot skills like basic AI literacy. From AI-assisted resume tools to curated networking outreach, today’s professionals are adapting to the longer hiring cycles and the evolving demands of recruiters.
“TopResume’s 2026 Job Seeker Trends Report underscores that successful career planning is no longer reactive but requires foresight, preparation, and adaptability to new market dynamics,” added Augustine.
