The power of intrapreneurs in the enterprise

This article was based on the interview with Adam Chen, the host of the Intrapreneurs series of The Innovation Economy podcast by Greg Kihlström for The Agile Brand with Greg Kihlström podcast. Listen to the original episode here:

Intrapreneurs are individuals who possess the unique ability to innovate and drive businesses forward. They are the change agents within organizations or the individuals who take the leap and start their own ventures within an existing organization, thus driving innovation and growth of an existing entity. These individuals are not just good employees; they possess a distinct set of qualities and characteristics that set them apart.

At the core of intrapreneurship is the ability to think differently and come up with new ideas. intrapreneurs are constantly seeking ways to do things differently and challenge the status quo. They are the ones who see opportunities where others see obstacles and are not afraid to take risks to pursue those opportunities. They have a vision for the future and are driven by a desire to transform the world around them.

Entrepreneurship often garners all the attention and headlines, especially among those earlier in their careers. The appeal of being in charge of one’s own destiny and having the freedom to drive the ship is undeniable. However, entrepreneurship is not limited to those who start their own businesses. It also encompasses individuals who innovate and drive change within existing organizations, though we need to use a different name for them, thus intrapreneurship applies.

Intrepreneurs within organizations, often referred to as internal change agents, face a different set of challenges. They must navigate within the boundaries and guardrails of the organization while still pushing for innovation. They must find ways to bring new ideas and concepts from one vertical to another and transform the organization from within. This requires resilience, perseverance, and the ability to influence and rally support from others.

While intrapreneurs have the freedom to pursue their ideas, they also face the challenge of staying focused and keeping their eye on the prize. It is easy to get distracted when there are countless opportunities and possibilities. However, successful intrapreneurs understand the importance of maintaining a clear vision and staying committed to their goals. They know how to prioritize and allocate resources effectively to ensure the viability and sustainability of their ventures.

Intrapreneurs not only innovate, but they also drive businesses. They understand that innovation alone is not enough; it must be coupled with a viable business model. Intrapreneurs are constantly thinking about how to make their ventures financially sustainable and profitable. They are skilled at identifying market needs, creating value propositions, and developing strategies to attract customers and generate revenue.

Intrapreneurs play a crucial role in driving businesses forward. They possess the ability to innovate, think differently, and challenge the status quo. Whether they are starting their own ventures or driving change within organizations, entrepreneurs are the driving force behind growth and success. Their ability to see opportunities, take risks, and create viable business models sets them apart. Intrapreneurs are the catalysts for change and the architects of a better future.
