Taking an agile approach to digital accessibility

This article was based on the interview with Corbb O’Connor of Level Access by Greg Kihlström for The Agile Brand with Greg Kihlström podcast.  Listen to the original episode here:

Agile accessibility refers to the application of agile principles and approaches to ensure digital accessibility and a more inclusive customer experience. Corb O’Connor explains that accessibility is often associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). WCAG outlines four key principles of accessibility: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.

The principle of perceivability focuses on providing multiple ways for users to perceive information, such as through visual or auditory means. Operability ensures that websites are usable for individuals who may use alternative methods of navigation, such as a keyboard. Understandability involves presenting content in a way that is easy to comprehend, considering users with learning or intellectual disabilities. Lastly, robustness refers to building websites that are compatible with various technologies.

Corb O’Connor emphasizes that digital accessibility goes beyond legal obligations. It aligns with business demands, such as diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as the desire to provide an excellent user experience. Consumers are becoming more aware of accessibility and expect brands to prioritize it.

The podcast suggests that applying agile principles to accessibility can help organizations address these challenges effectively. Agile methodologies, known for their iterative and collaborative approach, can ensure that accessibility is integrated throughout the development process rather than treated as an afterthought. This allows for faster updates and innovations in accessibility.

By adopting an agile approach, organizations can prioritize accessibility from the start of a project, involve relevant stakeholders, and continuously iterate and improve their accessibility efforts. This approach ensures that accessibility is not only compliant with legal requirements but also enhances the overall user experience.

The podcast highlights the importance of agile accessibility in improving digital accessibility. By integrating accessibility into the development process and adopting agile methodologies, organizations can create more inclusive and equitable digital experiences. This approach not only meets legal obligations but also aligns with business demands and consumer expectations.
