Yesterday’s Marketing Technology & AI News: October 29, 2026

Which version of your brand does the machine read? On October 28, 2026, Muck Rack, Fibr AI, Akeneo, DataTrue, Guideline and Contentstack issued releases that each answer part of that question. Muck Rack’s October 2026 What Is AI Reading? report, built on Generative Pulse data covering more than 40 million AI responses and 207 million citations in 2026, found that more than 84% of AI citations come from earned and third-party sources brands do not own or pay for, that owned media accounts for 15.2%, and that paid and advertorial content accounts for 0.3%.

Five of the six vendors that announced on October 28 sell a way to change what a machine reads about a brand. The sixth, DataTrue, measured what a brand’s website sends to machines after a visitor says no.

Muck Rack, the AI communications platform, published the fourth edition of the study through its Generative Pulse team, adding a September 2026 collection of 1,020 unbranded consumer prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Muck Rack’s October 2026 report found that journalism’s share of AI citations fell from 27% in May to 22%, and that ChatGPT drove most of the decline, with journalism dropping from 28.1% of ChatGPT citations in January to 22% in September while Claude held between roughly 28% and 24% and Gemini moved from 27.6% to 23.6%. The same report found that only 212 domains were cited by all four providers. For a team running Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) programs, the finding that matters most sits in the methodology notes: when Muck Rack ran the same prompt twice in one day, ChatGPT repeated 41% of its cited domains, Gemini 45% and Perplexity 94%.

Read Muck Rack’s ChatGPT figure against your own reporting. A team that runs a prompt once and sends the citation list to the executive committee has reported one draw from a distribution in which, by Muck Rack’s October 2026 measurement, 59% of the cited domains changed on a second run the same afternoon.

Fibr AI, the Accel-backed San Francisco experience optimization platform, launched Agent Experience Optimization (AXO) on October 28, 2026 and placed its bet on the 15.2% that brands own. Fibr stated that AXO identifies which AI platform or agent is visiting a site, naming ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Muse and GrokBot, and adapts the structure, depth and presentation of existing brand content for that visitor, then supports forms, applications and purchases on a consumer’s behalf through MCP and apps. Fibr’s October 28 release reports that on Fibr’s own website, 102 agent-ready pages produced average daily AI citations of 114 during October 1 to 7, 2026, up from 41 in the first launch week. That is one website, owned by the vendor, in a category where the vendor’s name is a plausible answer, and the release reports no customer results. Fibr sells page adaptation, which moves the cost of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) work from writers to whoever approves what each machine visitor sees. Serving a different arrangement of a page to each AI visitor is a decision your legal and brand teams should sign before your web team ships it, because Google’s spam policies have long defined cloaking as showing different content to automated visitors and people, and Fibr’s assurance of “approved facts” is a review process your team will have to staff.

Muck Rack and Fibr point at opposite ends of the same citation pool. Muck Rack sells to communicators and reports that earned media dominates; Fibr sells website optimization and reports that owned pages are gaining ground. Both are accurate within their own data, and both vendors sit on the side of the data they publish.

Here is how the Muck Rack and Fibr split plays out for a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) with $180,000 of remaining 2026 budget for AI visibility. Assume the brand’s citations across 200 tracked category prompts match Muck Rack’s October 2026 averages: per 100 citations, roughly 15 come from pages the brand owns and 84 from earned and third-party sources. Option one puts the full $180,000 into owned-page work. If the brand reproduced Fibr’s own-site result, owned citations would rise about 2.8 times, from 15 to roughly 42, and total citations from 100 to about 127, with nothing else moving. Option two puts the same $180,000 into earned media. Earned and third-party citations would need to rise by one third, from 84 to 112, to produce a total of about 128. The two options land within one citation of each other. The decision turns on three facts the CMO controls: which of the two lifts the team can produce at that price, which one compounds after the budget stops (earned coverage stays cited; adapted pages need ongoing review), and whether the measurement can detect either lift at all. With ChatGPT repeating 41% of cited domains between same-day runs, a 27% gain measured from single runs falls inside the noise. Run each tracked prompt at least five times per measurement period, report the median, and set the baseline before either program starts.

Akeneo, the Boston agentic product experience management platform, worked on the input machines read when the question is a product. Akeneo’s Autumn Release 2026, available October 28, 2026, extends its Ziggy orchestrator to Shopify, adds PX Insights analysis of how ready products are to be found by AI, and adds Readiness Policies that let a team define what ready means per channel, market or business objective and score every product against it. In a Product Information Management (PIM) system, an AI shopping surface now becomes one more channel with its own readiness definition. Akeneo stated that Ziggy works within the same role-based permissions as the human team, records every action as a traceable change, and proposes changes a person approves, and that Transparent AI labeling shows downstream channels what an agent wrote and what a person validated. Akeneo also acquired Dataggo, an AI-native Akeneo integration partner; buyers can read the acquisition as Akeneo’s estimate of where deployment work will land. The release lists no pricing and no customer results.

Guideline, the New York ad intelligence provider, put a different kind of brand-adjacent data inside the buyer’s own assistant. Guideline announced on October 28, 2026 that US digital pricing data by publisher, ad type and programmatic marketplace reaches the Guideline AI Agent and the Guideline Ad Intelligence Model Context Protocol (MCP) server on October 30, 2026, queryable from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, with a Programmatic Direct buy-channel view following on December 15. Guideline stated that its spend and pricing data represents approximately $200 billion in annual media investment across 65 countries. A media planner who asks a general-purpose assistant what a private marketplace deal should cost will now get a benchmark from Guideline’s data inside the chat. Somebody on the planning team still has to confirm which figure the assistant quoted, from which buy channel and which month, before that number lands in a negotiation.

DataTrue, the Philadelphia tag testing platform, measured the other machine audience on a brand website: the ad technology endpoints that receive visitor data. DataTrue’s Consent Gap benchmark, released October 28, 2026, tested 242 of the most visited US websites in retail, healthcare, banking, higher education and media in October 2026, loading each with no choice made, with the Global Privacy Control signal on, and after clicking the site’s reject button. DataTrue reported that 43% of sites (104 of 242) failed its core privacy tests, that 80% of sites with ad tracking (139 of 173) offered no obvious opt-out, that 76% of sites with ad tracking did not fully honor GPC, and that on 20 of 24 sites with a clear reject button, ad companies were still contacted after the visitor clicked it. On those 20 sites, the Consent Management Platform (CMP) recorded a preference that the tags did not act on. Marketing teams usually own the tag manager and the pixels; marketing teams therefore own this exposure, whoever signed the CMP contract.

Contentstack, the Austin digital experience platform company, published the time cost of structured content alongside the result. Contentstack reported on October 28, 2026, in announcing its 2026 Contentstack Experience Awards at ContentCon US in Chicago, that Philips moved 1.9 million pages across 90 locales and 45 languages onto structured content in 18 months, consolidated more than 75 page types into 35 templates, and saw conversions rise approximately 30%. Customers self-nominated, and six Contentstack executives chose the winners, so treat the figures as customer case studies with vendor selection. The 18 months is the number to plan around. A brand that wants AI engines to parse its site the way Philips now can should budget for a migration measured in quarters, then decide whether an adaptation layer such as Fibr’s is a bridge to that migration or a substitute for it.

So which version of your brand does the machine read? By Muck Rack’s October 2026 count, mostly the version other people wrote, about 84 citations in every 100. The vendors that announced on October 28 sell tools for the remaining share, for the product data underneath it, for the media pricing your planners query, and for the tags that keep firing after a visitor declines. Pick the share your team can move at a price you can measure, run every tracked prompt five times before you report it, and test what your site sends after a visitor clicks reject before an agent or a regulator runs that test for you.

Treat each figure as the vendor’s own measurement until your data repeats it

Muck Rack’s October 2026 report draws on Muck Rack’s proprietary Generative Pulse dataset and 1,020 prompts chosen by Muck Rack, and Muck Rack sells PR and GEO tooling to the communicators its earned-media finding favors. Fibr AI’s citation gain comes from a six-week test on Fibr’s own 102 pages with no customer results, no control group and no disclosure of prompt sets. Akeneo’s Autumn Release 2026 discloses no pricing, adoption figures or Dataggo deal terms, and capability availability varies by edition. DataTrue’s benchmark covers 242 sites tested in October 2026, and DataTrue sells the tag testing that would fix what it found; the 20-of-24 reject-button result rests on a sample of 24 sites. Guideline’s availability dates are forward-looking, with access varying by subscription. Contentstack’s award results come from self-nominated customers judged by Contentstack executives, with no stated baselines for the conversion and engagement figures.

Strategic priorities for marketing leaders

  • Rebuild AI visibility measurement around repeated runs. Muck Rack’s October 2026 report found ChatGPT repeated 41% of cited domains between same-day runs, so require at least five runs per tracked prompt and report medians.
  • Budget owned and earned AI visibility as separate lines with separate baselines. Muck Rack puts owned media at 15.2% of citations and earned and third-party sources above 84%; set the target for each before funding either.
  • Route any per-agent page adaptation through legal and brand review. Fibr AI’s AXO adapts content per AI visitor; document what each visitor class sees and who approved it.
  • Add AI shopping surfaces to your product readiness definitions. Akeneo’s Readiness Policies and PX Insights treat AI discovery as a channel; define the attributes that channel requires and score the catalog against them.
  • Test what your site sends after a visitor clicks reject. DataTrue found ad companies still contacted on 20 of 24 sites after a clear reject; run a reject-state tag audit on your top templates this quarter.
  • Require source and date on every benchmark your planners pull from an assistant. Guideline’s pricing data reaches ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot on October 30, 2026; make the buy channel and month part of every quoted CPM.

Generative Pulse: Earned Media Still Drives More Than 84% of AI Citations

Muck Rack, the AI communications platform, and its Generative Pulse team released the October 2026 edition of What Is AI Reading? on October 28, 2026, the fourth installment of its study of how generative AI systems cite sources. Muck Rack drew the findings from Generative Pulse data covering more than 40 million AI responses and 207 million citations in 2026, plus a September 2026 collection of 1,020 unbranded consumer prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Muck Rack reported that more than 84% of AI citations come from earned and third-party sources brands do not own or pay for, a share that has ranged from 82% to 89% across all four editions; that about 99% of cited links come from non-paid sources; and that paid and advertorial content held at 0.3% of citations, unchanged since May 2026. Journalism’s share of citations fell from 27% in May to 22%, and Muck Rack attributed most of the decline to ChatGPT, where journalism dropped from 28.1% of citations in January to 22% in September. Owned media rose from 13.7% to 15.2%, government and NGO sources from 8.6% to 9.6%, aggregators and encyclopedic sources from 17.4% to 18.3%, academic research from 4.0% to 4.4%, and third-party corporate content from 24% to 25.1%. Muck Rack reported that only 212 domains were cited by all four AI providers; that when the same prompt ran twice in one day, ChatGPT repeated 41% of its cited domains, Gemini 45% and Perplexity 94%; that 81% of major publishers blocking Claude’s search crawler received almost no Claude citations, compared with 12% of those allowing it; and that in ChatGPT’s Forbes citations, editorial content outperformed the paid Councils program by about 1.7 to 1. Greg Galant, cofounder and CEO of Muck Rack, is quoted.

Fibr AI Launches Agent Experience Optimization, Turning Brand Websites Into Engines for AI Visibility and Agent Action

Fibr AI, the Accel-backed San Francisco experience optimization platform, launched Agent Experience Optimization (AXO) on October 28, 2026. Fibr stated that AXO identifies which AI platform or agent is visiting a brand website, naming ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Muse and GrokBot, and adapts the structure, depth and presentation of existing brand content for that visitor without new articles or manual page rewrites. Fibr listed five capabilities: adapting existing content for AI visitors, optimizing for citation in AI answers, recommendations and comparisons, supporting forms, applications and purchases on a consumer’s behalf on-site or through AI assistants via MCP and apps, keeping approved facts, messaging and disclosures consistent with review and factual-consistency checks, and connecting AXO with Fibr’s Human Experience Optimization (HXO) personalization product. Fibr cited Promptwatch’s August measurement of an 86% decline in Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations and Peec AI research finding that daily retrievals of product pages for transactional prompts rose 119%. Fibr reported that it first deployed AXO on its own website, making 102 pages agent-ready across two launches, and that average daily AI citations rose from 41 during the first launch week to 114 during October 1 to 7, 2026, with 64 of those pages cited at least once. Ankur (AJ) Goyal, co-founder and CEO of Fibr AI, is quoted. Fibr named Noom, Cedars-Sinai, Asian Paints, ACT Fibernet and A1 Garage Door as customers; the release lists no pricing and no customer AXO results.
