Yesterday’s Marketing Technology & AI News | September 2, 2026

Vendors stopped selling capability yesterday and started selling unit cost.

On September 1, 2026, Optimizely announced a family of purpose-built, post-trained AI models for marketing work and reported 10x greater cost efficiency compared with state-of-the-art large language models in early testing. OroCommerce announced OroMomentum the same day and reported upgrades running 2x faster and custom development time cut by 50% on average. Neither company led with a new feature. Both led with a price per unit of work, and both asked a buyer to compare that price against what the buyer pays today.

The same day, NIQ (NYSE: NIQ) reported that 56% of 17,000 consumers surveyed across 17 markets have delayed a technology purchase because a product cost too much or because they were waiting for a discount. Read the two halves of September 1 together and the shape of the quarter appears: vendors are competing on the cost of producing marketing work at the same moment the customer on the other end is deferring purchases on price. Cheaper production does not fix deferred demand. It changes what a marketing organization can afford to test while demand stays soft, which is a smaller and more useful claim than the one the headlines make.

Three more releases attacked cost from the interface side. KNOREX (NYSE American: KNRX) launched KAI Assist inside its XPO advertising platform on September 1, 2026, replacing multi-layered dashboard navigation with plain-text commands, and stated it will ship the KNOREX XPO MCP Server in October 2026. Innovid announced the same day that it integrated Meta ads MCP into NIVO, its AI product, and joined Meta as an ads MCP partner. Locala launched Adaptive Advertising, a framework whose Planning Agents carry market insights into audiences and media decisions across demand-side platforms. Each of these removes navigation labor from a specialist’s day. None of them removes the judgment that follows the navigation.

Two releases sat outside the cost frame and still belong in the same reading. AlikeAudience made its third-party segments available inside the Amazon DSP Audience Hub in the United States and India on September 1, 2026, powered by Zeotap Data, extending targeting past Amazon’s first-party signals. SmarterX opened free access to its five-course AI for Marketing Course Series through September 30, 2026. One expands what a buyer can target inside a walled garden. The other addresses the constraint every cost claim on this list eventually runs into, which is whether anyone on the team can evaluate the output.

Check who wrote the benchmark before you budget against the score

Optimizely did something on September 1, 2026 that the marketing technology category has mostly avoided, which is publishing a measurement standard for its own product class. Mark-Bench tests models and agentic harnesses against 285 tasks spanning 15 marketing functions and more than 6,000 criteria, including writing a press release, creating a social post, and writing email copy. Optimizely released it as open source and invited other providers to run against it.

Optimizely also published its own score on it. Measured by Mark-Bench all-pass rate on default configurations, Optimizely reported that its Agent Platform scored 67% against 60% for Claude Code at 2x lower cost. A vendor that writes the test, selects the tasks, sets the pass criteria, and then reports a seven-point lead over a named competitor has produced a marketing artifact and a measurement instrument at the same time. Both things can be useful. Only one of them belongs in a procurement deck without a footnote.

The useful part is the task inventory. Whatever a buyer concludes about the score, the 285 tasks and 15 functions give a marketing operations lead a starting map of which recurring jobs are worth routing to a specialized model at all. That map costs nothing and does not depend on trusting Optimizely’s numbers. The score depends entirely on trusting them, at least until a third party runs the benchmark and publishes a result.

Optimizely’s underlying argument stands on its own merits. A general-purpose model carries parameters and pulls context that a narrow task never needs, and a team paying per token pays for that overhead on every call. Optimizely’s own global study of more than 2,000 B2B marketing leaders, cited in the September 1 release, found that 53% say current AI tools capture the facts of a brand and struggle to capture its emotional resonance. Post-training a smaller model on a narrower domain is a coherent response to both problems. Whether it produces 10x is a question a buyer answers with a pilot, not with a press release.

Run the arithmetic on your own volume before the vendor runs it for you

Take a mid-market marketing team producing 400 pieces of short-form content a month across email subject lines, social posts, product descriptions, and ad variants. Assume the team runs those jobs through a frontier model at roughly $0.90 per accepted output once you count the failed generations, the retries, and the context the team re-pastes each session. That is about $360 a month, or $4,320 a year. A 10x improvement takes the annual figure to $432.

The saving is $3,888. A single mid-level marketing operations salary is somewhere north of $90,000. The model cost was never the line item under pressure.

Run the same arithmetic on OroCommerce’s claim and the numbers move differently. An enterprise B2B commerce implementation with $600,000 in custom development runs to $300,000 if OroMomentum’s stated 50% reduction holds at that scale. That saving pays for a team. It also arrives with less evidence behind it, because OroCommerce published the 2x and 50% figures from internal measurement across its own development and customer work and published no sample size, no baseline definition, and no methodology.

The asymmetry is worth sitting with. The claim with the published benchmark saves a rounding error. The claim that would move a budget line comes with nothing a buyer can independently check. If you are the CMO weighing these two, the first question for OroCommerce is which projects the 50% was measured across, and whether any of them resembled yours. The second question is what the number does to total cost of ownership over a five-year horizon once you include the upgrade cadence, since Jary Carter, CEO and Co-Founder of OroCommerce, framed the announcement on total cost of ownership specifically.

Treat MCP support as a procurement question, not a feature

Two of the eight September 1 releases put Model Context Protocol at the center. Innovid integrated Meta ads MCP into NIVO and stated it worked with Meta’s product team through the beta program. KNOREX stated it will release the KNOREX XPO MCP Server in October 2026 so clients can connect Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI models directly to their advertising infrastructure.

This is the third consecutive month in which advertising platforms have shipped MCP servers into this publication’s coverage window. The pattern that matters for a buyer is what the protocol does to switching costs. A natural language interface built into one vendor’s dashboard keeps the team inside that vendor’s product. An MCP server exposes the same data and actions to whatever assistant the organization already runs, which means the interface layer stops being a reason to stay.

That cuts against the vendor and toward the buyer, and it is the most durable thing on this list. A marketing organization negotiating a renewal in Q4 now has a concrete ask: expose the account through MCP, scope the permissions in writing, and log every write. A vendor that declines is telling you the interface is the product.

The governance question arrives with the capability. Innovid stated that Meta ads MCP supplies authenticated access and that NIVO applies advertising logic on top. Neither Innovid nor KNOREX published what an assistant is permitted to change without human approval, and KNOREX’s own timeline puts the MCP server a month out from a KAI Assist rollout that completes at the end of September 2026. Ask both vendors for the permission model before the rollout, because retrofitting approval gates onto a live ad account is a worse project than specifying them up front.

What these releases do not prove

Every performance figure in this edition comes from the company that benefits from it. No independent party has verified any of them.

Optimizely authored Mark-Bench, selected its 285 tasks and 6,000 criteria, ran the test, and published its own 67% result against a named competitor’s 60%. Optimizely also stated the models are coming soon to Agent Platform customers and published no general availability date, so a buyer is comparing a shipped product against an announced one. The 10x cost efficiency figure comes from early testing that Optimizely did not describe.

OroCommerce published 2x faster upgrades and a 50% average reduction in custom development and extension modernization time from its own development and customer work, with no sample size, baseline, or methodology attached.

NIQ’s September 1, 2026 report forecasts $1.4 trillion in 2026 consumer technology and durable goods sales, up 5.1% year over year. NIQ’s own market outlook, published January 4, 2026 in collaboration with the Consumer Technology Association, projected 2026 sales holding roughly flat at minus 0.4% year over year against a 2025 base of about $1.3 trillion. Both figures come from the same company’s annual series eight months apart. NIQ published no reconciliation of the two. This is also the fourth NIQ dataset to appear in this series since early August 2026, and readers tracking the underlying research should note how much of it is repackaged from a common data foundation.

KNOREX announced KAI Assist and an October 2026 MCP server while operating under a continued listing notice. KNOREX disclosed on August 26, 2026 that NYSE American notified it on August 21, 2026 of non-compliance with Sections 1003(a)(i) and (ii) of the NYSE American Company Guide, citing a stockholders’ deficit of $6.5 million as of December 31, 2025 and net losses in each of its four most recent fiscal years. KNOREX stated it intends to submit a compliance plan by September 20, 2026 targeting compliance by February 21, 2028. A buyer signing a multi-quarter rollout that completes in October 2026 should read that filing alongside the product announcement.

Innovid, Locala, and AlikeAudience published no customer counts, no pricing, and no performance results with their September 1 announcements.

Strategic priorities for marketing leaders

  • Pilot before you believe the multiple. Run your three highest-volume recurring tasks through Optimizely’s Agent Platform and your current setup, and measure cost per accepted output instead of cost per call, since retries and rejected generations are where the real spend sits.
  • Ask OroCommerce for the measurement basis. Request the project count, the baseline definition, and the scope of work behind the stated 50% development time reduction before you build it into an implementation budget.
  • Put MCP exposure in the Q4 renewal. Require any advertising or commerce vendor up for renewal to expose account data and actions through Model Context Protocol, with the permission scope written into the contract.
  • Specify the write permissions before the rollout. Ask Innovid and KNOREX what an assistant can change without human approval, and log every write to a live ad account from day one.
  • Plan against deferred demand. NIQ’s finding that 56% of consumers have delayed a technology purchase over price argues for holding the promotional floor and leading on durability, quality, and trust, which NIQ reported consumers rank ahead of affordability.
  • Spend the free September on evaluation capacity. SmarterX’s course series is open through September 30, 2026, and the constraint on every cost claim in this edition is whether someone on your team can judge the output.

The through line from September 1 holds up under pressure: vendors moved the argument from what their software can do to what your work costs, and they did it in a month when NIQ says more than half of consumers are waiting for a discount. Cheaper production is real and it is smaller than it sounds. Take the savings, then spend the difference on the review capacity that decides whether any of the cheaper output ships.

Optimizely Introduces Purpose-Built AI Models for Marketing that Deliver Frontier-Level Quality at a Fraction of the Cost

Optimizely, the AI platform for marketing, announced on September 1, 2026 a family of purpose-built, post-trained AI models built for marketing work, and reported 10x greater cost efficiency compared with state-of-the-art large language models in early testing. Optimizely also introduced Mark-Bench, an open source benchmark that tests models against 285 tasks spanning 15 marketing functions and more than 6,000 criteria, including writing a press release, creating a social post, and writing email copy. Measured by Mark-Bench all-pass rate on default configurations, Optimizely reported that its Agent Platform scored 67% against 60% for Claude Code at 2x lower cost. The models draw on Mark-IQ, the Agent Platform data layer built on each organization’s own context, including experimentation history and web analytics. Optimizely cited its own global study of more than 2,000 B2B marketing leaders, which found that 53% say current AI tools capture the facts of a brand and struggle to capture emotional resonance. Imran Yousuf, Head of AI Engineering at Optimizely, stated that post-training models is the long-term answer to the cost and quality question, and Shafqat Islam, President of Optimizely, stated that generic agent harnesses are inefficient for domain-specific work. Optimizely stated the models are coming soon to all Agent Platform customers and gave no general availability date. The benchmark scores and the cost efficiency figure come from Optimizely and remain unverified by independent testing.

What did Optimizely announce on September 1, 2026?

Optimizely announced on September 1, 2026 a family of purpose-built, post-trained AI models built specifically for marketing tasks, and reported 10x greater cost efficiency compared with state-of-the-art large language models in early testing. Optimizely also introduced Mark-Bench, an open source benchmark for marketing AI performance, and reported that its Agent Platform scored a 67% all-pass rate on default configurations against 60% for Claude Code at 2x lower cost. Optimizely stated the models are coming soon to Agent Platform customers and published no general availability date. Both the cost efficiency figure and the benchmark scores come from Optimizely and no independent test has confirmed them.

What is Mark-Bench and what does it measure?

Mark-Bench is an open source benchmark that Optimizely introduced on September 1, 2026 to measure AI performance on marketing work specifically. Mark-Bench tests models and agentic harnesses against 285 tasks spanning 15 marketing functions and more than 6,000 criteria, including writing a press release, creating a social post, and writing email copy. Optimizely stated it built Mark-Bench so marketers, researchers, and other AI providers can test their own models against a shared measure of cost and performance. Optimizely authored the benchmark and published its own score on it, so a buyer should treat the reported results as vendor-supplied until a third party runs the tests.

What did NIQ’s September 1, 2026 report find about consumer technology spending?

NIQ (NYSE: NIQ) forecast global sales of consumer technology and durable goods at $1.4 trillion in 2026, up 5.1% year over year, and reported that 56% of consumers have delayed a technology purchase because a product cost too much or because they were waiting for a discount. NIQ based the September 1, 2026 report, titled Consumer Tech Trends 2027: How to Win When Every Purchase Must Be Justified, on a survey of 17,000 consumers across 17 markets combined with its global sales intelligence. NIQ reported that consumers rank durability, quality, convenience, and trust ahead of affordability when they define value. NIQ’s own January 4, 2026 outlook had projected 2026 sales flat at roughly minus 0.4% year over year, so a reader comparing the two should ask NIQ what changed.

Which advertising platforms added Model Context Protocol support on September 1, 2026?

Innovid and KNOREX both announced Model Context Protocol work on September 1, 2026. Innovid integrated Meta ads MCP into NIVO, its AI product, giving Meta advertisers authenticated access to campaign data through natural language conversation, and joined Meta as an ads MCP partner. KNOREX (NYSE American: KNRX) launched KAI Assist inside KNOREX XPO with complete rollout stated for the end of September 2026, and stated it will release the KNOREX XPO MCP Server in October 2026 so clients can connect Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI models to their advertising infrastructure. Neither company published pricing or performance results.

What should marketing leaders do with the cost claims in these September 1, 2026 announcements?

Treat each figure as a vendor measurement and ask for the baseline before you budget against it. Optimizely’s 10x cost efficiency claim and its 67% Mark-Bench score come from a benchmark Optimizely wrote, and OroCommerce’s 2x faster upgrades and 50% development time reduction come from OroCommerce internal measurement with no published sample size or methodology. A useful test is to run your own three highest-volume recurring tasks through the vendor’s setup and your current setup, measure cost per accepted output instead of cost per call, and compare the two numbers before you sign.
