Brief history

AI21 Labs was founded in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2017 by a team of leading AI and computer science experts: Professor Yoav Shoham, Ori Goshen, and Professor Amnon Shashua. The company’s mission was to fundamentally change the way people read and write using advanced artificial intelligence. In 2020, they launched their first product, the AI-powered writing assistant Wordtune.

The company gained significant attention in 2021 with the release of its Jurassic-1 family of large language models, positioning it as a direct competitor to other major LLM providers. In 2023, AI21 Labs released its next-generation Jurassic-2 models, which offered improved performance and efficiency. The company has successfully raised significant funding, including a $155 million Series C round in August 2023 that brought its valuation to $1.4 billion.
