Perceived Usefulness (PU) is a core construct in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) that describes the degree to which a person believes that using a specific system will improve their job performance. In TAM, PU is one of the strongest predictors of an individual’s intention to use a technology and, ultimately, actual usage.
In marketing organizations, PU is the extent to which marketers (and adjacent teams like sales ops, analytics, and IT) believe a tool will make their work measurably better—faster campaign execution, higher-quality audiences, improved reporting credibility, stronger personalization, fewer manual steps, or better governance.
How to calculate Perceived Usefulness (where applicable)
PU is typically measured via survey items rather than calculated from system logs. The most common approach is a Likert-scale index built from multiple statements, aggregated into a composite score.

- Define “useful” in operational terms. Tie usefulness to concrete outcomes: fewer handoffs, faster approvals, better segmentation accuracy, higher deliverability, improved attribution reliability.
- Measure PU by persona and workflow. PU is rarely uniform; campaign ops may see value while creative teams see friction, or vice versa.
- Lead with “time-to-value” workflows. Early wins should be obvious and frequent (weekly, not quarterly). If users can’t see the benefit quickly, PU decays.
- Translate features into “job performance” language. Avoid platform capability lists; describe what improves (speed, quality, accuracy, compliance, reuse).
- Instrument proof alongside perception. Pair PU surveys with before/after metrics such as cycle time, defect rates, time spent on manual reconciliation, and number of rework loops.
- Reduce “value leakage” from bad inputs. If data quality, taxonomy, or governance is weak, users won’t experience usefulness even if the tool is excellent.
- Close the loop visibly. When improvements happen, broadcast them with specifics (“launch time dropped from 10 days to 6 days for lifecycle emails”) so belief catches up to reality.

- AI-driven usefulness expectations: Users will judge usefulness against a higher baseline (automation, recommendations, drafting, analysis). Tools that don’t reduce cognitive load will see declining PU even if they “work.”
- Continuous adoption tuning: PU will shift from a one-time change-management measure to a continuous product-ops metric used to shape roadmaps and enablement.
- Governance as usefulness: With rising privacy and compliance demands, usefulness will increasingly include “keeps me out of trouble” outcomes—policy enforcement, consent alignment, auditability, and explainability.
