That is the recurring joke of digital infrastructure: it looks weightless right up until someone has to build another power substation.

Why AI has environmental consequences

AI systems are resource-intensive because they rely on large volumes of computation. Training large models can require substantial electricity over concentrated periods, while inference can create persistent ongoing demand once millions of users or applications interact with a model. MIT notes that for generative AI, electricity demand does not stop after model training; deployment, real-world usage, and repeated fine-tuning continue drawing large amounts of energy. MIT also notes that as generative AI becomes more common, inference may become the dominant source of electricity demand.

The environmental footprint also extends beyond electricity. Water is needed to cool data center hardware, and chip manufacturing adds upstream impacts from mining, chemicals, fabrication, and transport. UNEP and MIT both emphasize that AI infrastructure also creates hardware-related impacts such as raw-material demand and e-waste, not just operational energy use.

Electricity demand

The clearest environmental implication of AI is rising electricity use in data centers. The International Energy Agency’s Energy and AI report states that global electricity generation to supply data centers is projected to grow from 460 TWh in 2024 to over 1,000 TWh in 2030 and 1,300 TWh in 2035 in its base case. The IEA also says data centers rise from about 1% of global electricity generation today to 3% in 2030.

This does not mean all of that growth comes from AI alone, but AI is a major driver of new demand. The IEA further states that renewables are expected to meet nearly half of the additional demand through 2030, yet natural gas and coal also remain important in meeting near-term growth. That means AI expansion can coincide with both cleaner supply growth and continued fossil generation, depending on region and grid conditions.

Greenhouse gas emissions

AI usage affects emissions because electricity grids still rely heavily on fossil fuels in many regions. The IEA projects that CO2 emissions from electricity generation for data centers peak at around 320 Mt CO2 by 2030 in its base case before declining modestly afterward. A Nature Sustainability study on AI servers in the United States estimates that annual AI-server deployment in the United States could generate a water footprint of 731 to 1,125 million cubic meters and additional annual carbon emissions of 24 to 44 Mt CO2-equivalent between 2024 and 2030, depending on the scale of expansion. The study also finds that 71% of total water footprint is indirect rather than direct, which means the electricity system matters as much as the cooling system.

Materials, chip manufacturing, and e-waste

The environmental implications of AI also include the hardware supply chain. GPUs, servers, cooling systems, and networking equipment require minerals, fabrication plants, chemicals, and transport. MIT notes that GPU manufacturing is more complex than CPU manufacturing and carries additional material and transport emissions. UNEP likewise highlights that data centers depend on critical minerals and rare elements and that data center growth increases electronic waste, including hazardous materials.

Measure vendor and workload efficiency

Organizations should ask vendors for disclosure on energy sourcing, carbon accounting, water use, hardware efficiency, and infrastructure location. OECD and UNEP both emphasize the need for stronger transparency and standardized reporting.

Reduce unnecessary inference

Prompt-heavy workflows, repeated generations, and unnecessary reprocessing increase ongoing demand. Caching, smaller models, retrieval-based approaches, workflow design, and tighter prompt governance can reduce waste. MIT’s framing is useful here: deployment and inference matter as much as training once AI reaches large-scale use.

Consider location and energy mix

The carbon and water effects of AI workloads depend on where data centers are located and how local grids are powered. The Nature Sustainability study shows strong regional variation, with environmental outcomes shaped by grid carbon intensity, water-use effectiveness, and local water scarcity.

Extend hardware life where feasible

Rapid hardware refresh cycles add material and e-waste burdens. UNEP recommends reusing components where feasible, while broader sustainability practice favors circularity and longer useful life for infrastructure.

Best practices for marketers

For marketing teams, the practical question is not whether to use AI. That argument has already left the building. The better question is where AI creates enough value to justify its footprint.

Good practice includes using smaller or task-specific models for routine workflows, avoiding unnecessary regeneration of assets, consolidating experimentation instead of running endless prompt variations, and selecting martech or cloud vendors that disclose sustainability metrics. For content operations, it also helps to distinguish between AI features that save substantial human effort and those that mainly create more versions of things no one asked for.

Several trends are likely to shape the environmental implications of AI over the next few years.

First, measurement will improve. OECD and UNEP both call for standardized disclosure and better environmental accounting, and that is likely to become more common through regulation and customer pressure.

Second, infrastructure choices will matter more. The IEA expects renewables to play a major role in meeting growing data center demand, but it also expects fossil fuels to remain part of the near-term mix. That means environmental outcomes will depend heavily on siting, procurement, grid upgrades, and energy-policy choices.

Third, efficiency gains will compete with demand growth. Better chips, cooling, and model design can reduce per-unit impact, but growing adoption can still increase total footprint. The Nature Sustainability study shows meaningful reduction potential from better power-usage effectiveness, water-usage effectiveness, and improved siting, while MIT and OECD both note that rising usage can easily outpace those gains.
